Ph.D. Position Available
Arctic Marine Ecology
Norwegian Polar Institute
Application Deadline: Tuesday, 10 May 2005
A Ph.D. position is available at the Norwegian Polar Institute in arctic
marine ecology, involving studies of polar cod/zooplankton. The position
is linked to a research project MariClim "Marine ecosystem consequences
of climate induced changes in water masses off West-Spitsbergen", which
is coordinated by the Norwegian Polar Institute and financed by the
Norwegian Research Council's NORKLIMA program.
Project Description
The candidate will be involved in a large, interdisciplinary project,
with studies of abundance/biomass-distribution of zooplankton and polar
cod (Boreogadus saida) in Kongsfjorden in Svalbard. The study aims to
locate concentrations of prey for little auk (Alle alle) and
black-legged kittiwake (Rissa trydactyla). The distribution of
zooplankton/pelagic fish in Kongsfjorden - Kongsfjord shelf will be
interpreted with regard to water mass characteristics. The
biomass-distribution of zooplankton and fish will be studied by means of
echo sounder (EK-60) and samples will be obtained with pelagic trawl and
plankton nets (Multi-Plankton Sampler and MIK net). Participation in
research ship cruises in July 2006-2007 (possibly also 2005) will be a
part of the project work. Predator-prey relationships will be
determined by means of analyses of stable isotopes and lipids, and it is
also possible to perform experimental studies on this topic in the new
Arctic Marine Laboratory in Ny-Alesund.
Qualifications
The applicant should have a graduate degree in marine ecology or
equivalent education with relevant course combination. It is desirable
that the applicant has qualifications in quantitative analyses (e.g.
statistics, mathematics, physics) in addition to marine ecology.
Experience with hydroacoustics and experimental ecology is a plus.
The position is formally linked to the Norwegian Polar Institute.
Academically, the position will be under the Norwegian College of
Fishery Science, University of Tromso. The candidate will be supervised
by experienced researchers at the Norwegian Polar Institute and at the
University of Tromso.
