A Ph.D. Assistantship is available to study the breakup process of
Antarctic sea ice. Important topics to be investigated include coupled
influences on the fracture and constitutive behavior of sea ice, the
influence of loading rate versus specimen size on the fracture behavior,
fractal descriptions of the failure surfaces, and novel test geometries
that should benefit the fracture and constitutive measurements.
Field work will be in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Interest in
experiments, both lab and field, is preferred. Field experience is a
plus. The annual stipend is approximately $19,000 USD and full tuition
support is provided.
Review of applications will begin immediately until a suitable candidate
is found. Please send (e-mail preferred) a cover letter of interest,
resume, and copies or information regarding GRE scores and transcripts
