Position Announcement
Diatom Biostratigraphy
Norwegian Polar Institute
Application Deadline: Friday, 13 May 2005
The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), Polar Climate Program, invites
applications for a three year Ph.D. or a two year Postdoctoral position
in diatom biostratigraphy financed by VISTA - cooperation on basic
petroleum research between Statoil and the Norwegian Academy of Science
and Letters.
Responsibilities
The position is part of NPI's interdisciplinary Polar Climate Program,
which studies the climate history of the polar oceans, and
ocean-atmosphere processes and interactions. The project is part of
IODP´s Arctic Coring Expedition 2004 (ACEX;
http://www.ecord.org/acex/acex.html). A unique 180 meter thick sequence
with biosiliceous sediments of Middle Eocene age was recovered during
ACEX. The successful applicant is expected to utilize ACEX samples to
develop a diatom biostratigraphy and conduct research associated with
climate development and variability of the Arctic during the Middle
Eocene. Close collaboration, through visits to Japan, is expected with
Japanese colleagues who are working on the diatom taxonomy of the ACEX
sediments.
Qualifications
NPI seeks candidates with background in marine geology / biostratigraphy
and special expertise in diatom taxonomy. The applicants should provide
documentation for previous work related to diatom biostratigraphy and/or
paleoceanography. A well developed professional network is also an
asset. We seek a candidate who has a strong commitment to collaborative
problem solving, also has the ability to work independently, has a
positive attitude, and is flexible. Female candidates are encouraged to
apply for the position. The successful applicant will start on 1
