After a nationwide search, the University of Alaska Anchorage has hired
Dr. Douglas Causey, currently a senior biologist with Harvard
University, to guide its growing research programs and graduate studies.
He will begin his duties at UAA on June 1. In addition to serving as
senior biologist at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Biology, Causey is
also a senior fellow with the Environment and Natural Resources Program
of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, part of the
Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government. Causey serves as a
research associate with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in
Pittsburgh and as a research associate with the Smithsonian
Institution's Arctic Studies Center. Causey also brings strong ties to
the National Science Foundation, both as a program officer-with the
Arctic Sciences section of NSF's Office of Polar Programs, for
example-and as a highly funded researcher. He has extensive experience
in Alaska and has authored numerous publications on such related topics
as arctic paleoclimatology, the breeding ecology of seabirds, and human
dimensions of environmental change.
As UAA's research programs have expanded, the position of vice provost
for research and graduate studies has become one of the university's
most significant positions. "We are delighted that our current research
success and future potential have attracted someone with Dr. Causey's
exceptional background and qualifications," said UAA Provost Dr. Ted
Kassier. "His leadership will enable us to move ahead as we take our
research and graduate programs to a still higher level."
