Job Description
The successful applicant will work for SAIC (http://www.saic.com), a
contractor to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), to provide remote
sensing and geographic analysis support to the Alaska Geographic
Sciences Office research team at the USGS Alaska Science Center in
Anchorage, Alaska. Primary duties will include land cover/land use
mapping and biophysical landscape status and trends assessment. The
selected applicant will produce land cover/land use maps using standard
multivariate and/or regression tree software; perform statistical
analysis of the final land cover data sets; obtain and analyze land
cover/land use and ancillary data sets over large mapping units or
sampling blocks for status and trends analysis over the boreal and
arctic landscapes; and analyze landscape characteristics derived from
satellite imagery (e.g., NDVI). The successful applicant will be
encouraged to identify related areas of potential research and provide
input for future project planning. The candidate will be expected to
develop reports and presentations in cooperation with project
participants at local, national, and international levels and to
summarize research results in peer-reviewed journal publications.
Education
Candidates should have a Masters or Ph.D. degree in geography,
environmental studies, forestry, biology, or a related discipline. A
Bachelors degree with four years related experience may be substituted.
Required Skills
Candidates should have one or more years of applied experience in remote
sensing/digital image processing with a good understanding of remote
sensing and image analysis concepts, basic knowledge of GIS, land
surface monitoring, and statistical analysis. An ability to examine the
social, economic, and biophysical processes and interactions that shape
the form and function of processes occurring across the landscape;
ability to assess the implications of land management policies and
climate variability and change on land surface dynamics; and investigate
the major driving forces of change in temperate and boreal terrestrial
ecosystems are highly desirable. The candidate should have experience in
implementation of field techniques; flexibility to travel and work in
arduous remote field conditions; and the ability to travel domestically
in the United States. The position requires an individual who is
team-oriented, self-motivated, and well organized with exceptional
verbal and written communication skills. The individual will be expected
to report the progress and results of research in quarterly reports, at
internal and external meetings and conferences. The successful candidate
should have a demonstrated ability to produce peer-reviewed journal
publications and provide presentations at professional meetings.
Required technical skills include statistical analysis software (e.g.,
SAS, S+, or SPSS), image analysis software (e.g., Imagine, ENVI, LAS),
geographical information systems (e.g., ArcGIS, ArcView), and Microsoft
applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access).
Desired Skills
Desired experience includes the ability to work closely with others in
an office environment and in a remote field camp environment; work with
scientists and administrative personal from other disciplines and
cooperating institutions; show proficiency and knowledge with the
analysis of visible and near infrared satellite (e.g., Landsat 7) image
processing. Familiar with multivariate (e.g., isodata, Bayesian) and/or
regression tree (e.g., C-5, CART) software.
