In summer 2003 comprehensive sample material was recovered from lakes,
soils, and geomorphological units on two islands at the outer coast of
NE Greenland. The fieldwork was conducted within the scope of an
international research project that is targeted on a detailed
reconstruction of the regional Late Quaternary glacial and postglacial
climatic and environmental history. A comparison of the deduced history
with that from other coastal ice-free regions of Greenland shall
contribute to a better understanding of regional peculiarities in ice
movements, relative sea-level changes, and climate developments, and of
the related reasons, such as changes in the atmospheric and oceanic
circulation patterns.
The contribution of the University Leipzig to the project focuses on
paleolimnological studies. For this purpose the university is seeking
potentially interested candidates for two Ph.D. positions, which
concentrate their analytical work and paleoenvironmental interpretations
on (1) chronological, sedimentological, and biogeochemical studies of
the sediment sequences recovered, and (2) determination of fossil
chironomid successions in the sediment cores; in close collaboration
with Utrecht University, The Netherlands.
The positions shall start on 1 September 2005 and are funded for two
years by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with an opportunity for a
third year. Employment conditions and salary are in accordance with the
university regulations for academic personnel.
Candidates should have a Diploma or M.Sc. in geosciences (both
positions), biology (position #2) or related disciplines. Applicants
must have the ability to efficiently work in a small interdisciplinary
team. Paleolimnological experience, knowledge of appropriate analytical
techniques, and good English language proficiency will be an advantage.
The University Leipzig is an equal opportunity/affirmative action
employer and encourages applications from qualified women and
individuals from underrepresented groups. Female candidates and disabled
candidates who are equally qualified will receive preference. The
deadline for applications, including a detailed CV, is Sunday, 24 July
2005.
