The Department of Geology at Lund University invites applications for a
postdoctoral position in Quaternary geology. The purpose of the position
is to complement the already strong paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental
research at the department with an employee who can both deepen and
widen cryosphere related research. This senior research assistant will
be an important contributor to the GeoBiosphere Science Centre (CGB) at
Lund University. Knowledge about the cryosphere plays a key role in our
understanding of landscape development and geobiosphere processes in
glaciated, or previously glaciated, regions, as well as large scale
global changes. For example, recent research implies that the cryosphere
is very sensitive to solar activity changes, and that these relatively
small variations may be transformed via the cryosphere to enhanced
changes in the global climate system. Therefore, research on glacial
systems and their dynamics, development, and impact on landscapes and
surrounding environments is largely important to an increased
understanding of how Earth's spheres are coupled and interact. Research
on the cryosphere and its development and interaction with surrounding
spheres is therefore essential for the activities at the GeoBiosphere
Science Centre.
In this position, the successful candidate will conduct his or her own
research and supervise Ph.D. students within Quaternary Sciences at the
Department of Geology, CGB. Senior research assistants are partly
(5-10%) engaged with undergraduate teaching, as well. The successful
candidate will be an important part of the cross-disciplinary activities
at CGB and the glacial geology research group within Quaternary
Sciences. The research group works in close cooperation with glacial
geologists in Copenhagen. In connection with the upcoming International
Polar Year, the employee is expected to join a Danish-Swedish research
project, with a planned expedition to northern Greenland during the
summer of 2006. This will form part of and further develop the ongoing
Danish-Swedish cooperation, including common Ph.D. supervision. There
will also be possibilities to carry out research in other regions, such
as northern and southern Sweden, Iceland, and Siberia, in cooperation
with colleagues at CGB, and also to carry out completely independent
research projects. It is expected that the successful candidate will
apply for his or her own research money from main funding bodies. The
ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement.
Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree in Geology/Quaternary
Geology (or Physical Geography or Geophysics) with an emphasis on
glacial geology. Relevant postdoctoral experience and the ability to
carry out his or her own research projects will be regarded as a merit.
