UNEP/GRID-Arendal has for many years acknowledged that one of the
cornerstones in communicating environmental and sustainable development
issues is through visual means--through maps or other forms of
illustrations.
The new UNEP/GRID-Arendal Maps and Graphics Library has been set up as a
repository to present outputs from publications, projects, and
web-products that have been produced by UNEP/GRID-Arendal throughout the
years. These include, among many others, the popular Vital Graphics
series of publications, the GLOBIO human impact maps, and illustrations
from the Environment Times newspaper.
This website presents a collection of interactive maps, as well as a
comprehensive catalogue of illustrations, referenced by publication,
theme, or geographic region. There are currently hundreds of graphics
available in the database, and the service is continuously updated and
revised.
One of the main areas of focus for UNEP/GRID-Arendal has been the
greater Arctic, and the library currently contains 83 graphics from
various collections and projects. In addition, the website contains the
Arctic Environmental Atlas (http://maps.grida.no/arctic) an interactive
map service with thematic data, from circumpolar to regional level.
