A symposium entitled "North Atlantic Climate and Ecosystems: A Current
Threat?" will be held 11-12 September 2006 in Reykjavik, Iceland.
This symposium will assess the current state of knowledge on ocean
currents, climate, and ecosystems in the North Atlantic, and their
interactions, bearing in mind the risk of change in the system due to
climate change. Participants will also identify priority future research
tasks in these fields, to further improve understanding of the system,
which would help assessing risks and enlighten policy decisions.
Leading scientists involved in various aspects of research on the North
Atlantic will lecture on the following themes:
- Ocean currents and climate
- Marine ecosystems and climate
- Modelling the marine environment
Presentations will be followed by discussion.
Sponsors include four Icelandic Government Ministries (Environment,
Fisheries, Foreign, and Science and Culture), The Nordic Council of
Ministers, and the West Nordic Ocean Climate Programme.
Participants will be invited for a visit to the fishing village of
Grindavik, and the Saltfish Museum, followed by a dinner at the Blue
Lagoon, a geothermal pool and spa.
