You are invited to submit an abstract to the following special session
at this year's American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting:

Session OS 10: Upper Ocean Physics at High Latitudes

Session Description:
Heightened awareness of polar regions as both a prominent symptom and an
important feedback element in global climate change has focused
attention on dynamical and thermodynamical exchanges among the upper
ocean, sea ice, and polar atmosphere. A number of recent projects have
contributed substantially to our observational base related to these
complex processes, which are sometimes significantly affected by
equation-of-state issues (e.g., thermobaricity, cabbeling, double
diffusion) not often considered elsewhere. Advances in computational
tools (e.g., LES and non-hydrostatic models) have further enhanced our
understanding. Organizers invite presentations that explore, from
observations, modeling, and theory, (i) exchanges between the upper
ocean and atmosphere through the sea-ice cover and through open water
(leads/polynyas), (ii) maintenance of polar well-mixed layers through
the seasonal cycle of melting and freezing and at the ice pack margins,
(iii) mixing at the interface between the well-mixed layer and the
underlying ocean, and (iv) formation of cold, saline water by
air-sea-ice interaction.
