The Royal Norwegian Embassy and the University of Alaska Fairbanks are
pleased to invite you to participate in the Helge Ingstad Memorial
Symposium on Arctic Change, which will be held on 8-9 September 2006 at
the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This symposium will explore various
areas of scientific research shared between Norway and Alaska and
promote meaningful institutional networks and collaborative projects for
closer and more targeted research cooperation. It will emphasize the
human dimension of arctic change to provide a greater understanding of
the impact on traditional communities in the arctic region.
The symposium celebrates the memory of Dr. Helge Ingstad, the Norwegian
scientist, explorer, and author who lived with the Nunamiut people of
Anaktuvuk Pass from 1949 to 1950 documenting their history, culture and
traditions. Upon his departure, Ingstad was symbolically given a
mountain by the Native elders of the area as a sign of their friendship.
The symposium will close with a ceremony at Anaktuvuk Pass on 10
September where the recent official approval of the "Ingstad Mountain"
will be celebrated.
