You are invited to attend the Arctic Global Ocean Observing System
(GOOS) Planning Meeting, which will be held on 12-13 September 2006 in
Bergen, Norway.
The objective of the meeting is to plan the next steps in organizing and
developing operational oceanography services for the arctic and
sub-arctic regions. This is a follow-up to the planning document
entitled "The Arctic Ocean and the Need for an Arctic GOOS", published
by EuroGOOS in 2005. At present there are several ongoing projects and
services in operational oceanography in the Arctic, and during IPY there
will be increased data collection and modelling efforts that can be used
as building blocks for Arctic GOOS. It is expected that the meeting will
result in identification of next steps to develop an Arctic GOOS
Alliance based on initiatives taken by EuroGOOS and support from the
Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC),
Intergovernmental GOOS Committee (IGOOS), and non-European countries
such as USA and Canada.
This is an open meeting for anyone who is interested in the development
of operational oceanography in arctic regions. If you would like to
participate, please register by sending an e-mail to admin [at] nersc.no with
a copy to stein.sandven [at] nersc.no.
