Measurements of sea ice draft from submarine upward looking sonar are
newly available from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).
Sixteen cruises were added to the previously published data set of 25
cruises. While data from the 25 cruises were originally recorded
digitally, the data from the added cruises were recorded on paper rolls.
The University of Washington Polar Science Center investigators who
contributed the data devised a method to scan and digitize the analog
data and process them in a way consistent with the preexisting data set.
In all, the data set includes almost 122,000 km of submarine cruise
tracks. The data are an invaluable record of sea ice thickness.
Funding from the NSF Office of Polar Programs supported the work.
Publication of the data at NSIDC is supported by the NOAA National
Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) National
Geophysical Data Center.
