The US Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee and the US
Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a joint hearing to discuss
the upcoming International Polar Year (IPY). The public at large is
invited to attend. The hearing will take place at 3:15 PM EDT Tuesday,
26 September 2006 in 253 Russell Senate Office Building with Senator
Lisa Murkowski (AK) and Senator Ted Stevens (AK) presiding.
Witnesses include Dr. Arden Bement, NSF Director; Dr. Robin Bell, a
Doherty Senior Research Scientist, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of
Columbia University; Vice Admiral Robert Papp, Chief of Staff, United
States Coast Guard; Mr. Mead Treadwell, Chair, U.S. Arctic Research
Commission; Dr. Buck Sharpton, Vice Chancellor, University of Alaska
Fairbanks Center for Research Services; Dr. Alan Parkinson, Deputy
Director, Arctic Investigation Program, Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention; Dr. Thomas Armstrong, Earth Surface Dynamics Program
Coordinator, United States Geological Survey.
The US Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee and the US
Senate Foreign Relations Committee will also webcast the hearing. For
