The Department of Biology at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, has
postdoctoral and graduate positions available in terrestrial ecosystem
biogeochemistry.
The positions will contribute to a research group interested in
understanding the biogeochemical aspects of terrestrial ecosystem
structure and functioning at scales from microns to kilometers and
minutes to centuries. A recent funding award for personnel has provided
the opportunity to develop and expand the scope of research. Right now,
the research focuses on the controls over carbon and nutrient cycling
and their interactions in arctic tundra and temperate grassland and
forest ecosystems. The following questions are addressed:
- Do winter and spring-thaw biogeochemical activities significantly
influence annual patterns of nutrient cycling and plant primary
production in seasonally snow-covered ecosystems?
Do seasonal and spatial variations in soil microbial communities
significantly influence terrestrial ecosystem functioning?Do shrub-snow interactions promote wintertime soil biogeochemical
activities that favour shrub proliferation in arctic tundra?What are the patterns and controls on soil carbon accumulation along
chronosequences of abandoned farmland in eastern Canada?
