A PhD student opportunity is available at the Norwegian Institute for
Nature Research (NINA) in Trondheim, Norway. The student will contribute
to the Norwegian part of a collaborative International Polar Year (IPY)
project funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The position will
focus on boreal/arctic vegetation ecology, specifically biotic and
abiotic processes governing position and structure of the arctic
forest-tundra ecotone and development of methods for characterizing
changes throughout the ecotone that can be used to predict effects of
different climate scenarios.
A masters degree in vegetation ecology, physical geography, or a similar
discipline is required. Further requirements include the ability to work
in a team, competence in vegetation ecology, and fluency in English
(written and spoken). The position requires extensive fieldwork in the
Sub-Arctic (Norway and Russia), thus prior field experience is also
necessary. Knowledge of statistical analyses and modelling is highly
desirable, and some fluency in Russian is an advantage.
