This is a call for papers to be presented at the International Union of
Geodesy and Geophysics General Assembly being held on 2-13 July 2007, in
Perugia, Italy:
Session JPSCCS004: Dynamics and Mass Budget of Arctic Glaciers
Session Description:
About 50% of the world's glaciers and ice caps are located in Arctic/
sub-Arctic areas. It is therefore important to know the current and
future volume changes of these glaciers. The calving flux contributes
10-50% of the total mass loss. In spite of the large volume, the calving
loss is not well known. It varies across the Arctic. The calving flux
will change in a future, possibly warmer climate and this dynamic
response should be incorporated in mass balance calculations and mass
balance modelling of future response. The objective of this symposium is
to discuss the current status and future of the mass balance of glaciers
in the Arctic with a special focus on how to include calving in mass
balance assessments. There will be an opportunity for papers to be
published in a special volume of "Annals of Glaciology."
