The National Park Service (NPS) is holding meetings for members of the
scientific community who have an interest in research or resource
management activities in Denali National Park and Preserve. NPS is
preparing a Resource Stewardship Strategy (RSS) for Denali, which will
influence NPS resource funding decisions and research priorities during
the next 15-20 years. The strategy is scheduled to be completed by the
end of 2007. Denali is the first park in the Alaska Region to develop a
RSS. Over the next few years, all national parks in Alaska will be
developing similar documents.
At this time, NPS is gathering ideas about specific resources concerns
that should be addressed by the "comprehensive strategies" developed
through the RSS and about how to measure the park's success in
maintaining resource values. The RSS will be tightly linked to the
desired resource conditions expressed in the park's General Management
Plan, Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), and the
park's original enabling legislation.
Two meetings directed specifically at the research community have been
scheduled:
