The Office of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF)
announces the appointment of Fae L. Korsmo to the position of Staff
Associate to the OPP Director. Korsmo will provide support to the
director and OPP in a wide variety of activities, including those
involving interfaces with other federal agencies, interagency working
groups, and organizations such as the Polar Research Board and
international scientific associations. Korsmo joined NSF in 1997 as the
Program Director for Arctic Social Sciences. Prior to joining NSF she
was a professor of political science at the University of Alaska

infrastructure, and science and technology centers. From 2001 through
2003, she managed large research infrastructure awards in the
Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)
jurisdictions and conducted extensive outreach to faculty and students
in EPSCoR states and territories. In late 2003 Korsmo joined the Office
of Integrative Activities, working with fellow program directors to
manage the most recent Science and Technology Centers competition. She
also worked with the National Science Board and facilitated the
Committees of Visitors process. Her independent research has centered on
recent history of science and science-society relations, with
publications focused on polar science and the International Geophysical
Year.

For the past year and a half, Korsmo has served as a policy analyst and
advisor in the NSF Office of the Director. Her appointment to OPP became
