Papers are invited for Forging One's Own Future: Indigenous Childhood
and Youth in the Arctic, a session at the Alaska Anthropological
Association 2007 Annual Meeting being held on 14-17 March 2007, in
Fairbanks, Alaska.
Session description:
Problems concerning the future of young generations in arctic indigenous
communities have been considered only as part of broader discussions on
general social and economic situations in the remote areas of the North.
This session is designed to explore current social situations in arctic
indigenous communities and the ways they affect visions of the future of
younger generations. Session organizers encourage discussions of how
younger generations respond and react to current ideologies reinforced
by mass media, community, region, and household. Since children and
adolescents eventually grow up to be adults who carry with them their
youthful decisions and longings, which have significance in their adult
lives, it is important to consider how existing social practices and
ideologies impact young peoples' representations of themselves and their
visions of their own futures. For example, consideration should be given
to how they evaluate their own social and economic positions in rapidly
changing societies, how they orient themselves towards the future
through personal, social, and culturally constituted practices, and the
social resources on which they draw while envisaging their own futures.
The session will begin with brief presentations from a panel of
international researchers, which will lay the groundwork for facilitated
discussion related to indigenous young people, their experiences of
childhood, and their conceptions of the future.
