Papers are now being accepted for the following session at the joint
meeting of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographical Society,
Canadian Geophysical Union, and American Meteorological Society
(CMOS-CGU-AMS) being held on 28 May-1 June 2007, in St. John's,
Newfoundland, Canada:
Session I08: The Influence of Sea Ice Variability on the Atmosphere and
Ocean
Session description:
Complex interactions take place between many components of the climate
system, including the atmosphere, ocean, snow, and ice in polar regions.
Variations in sea ice affect the global climate by altering the surface
albedo and the exchanges of heat, moisture, and momentum between the
atmosphere and ocean. This session will address the impact of natural
and anthropogenic variations in arctic and Antarctic sea ice on the
atmosphere and ocean from theoretical, numerical, and observational
perspectives. Abstracts are welcome on research that covers all time and
space scales, including the influence of leads on the adjacent
atmosphere and ocean, as well as the global atmospheric and oceanic
response to reduction in sea ice due to the increase in greenhouse
gases. Phenomena of interest include the effect of sea ice variability
on air-sea fluxes, boundary layer processes, clouds, storms, and storm
tracks, circulation of the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, deep water
formation and thermohaline circulation, and dominant patterns of
atmospheric and oceanic variability.
Session conveners:
Mike Alexander, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Uma Bhatt, University of Alaska Fairbanks
John Cassano, University of Colorado at Boulder
Clara Deser, National Center for Atmospheric Research
Abstracts must be submitted by Thursday, 15 February 2007, at the
CMOS-CGU-AMS website, which is available at:
