The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP) announces
the first Partnering and Networking Workshop to be held on Thursday, 15
February 2007, 1:00-5:00 p.m. in Anchorage, Alaska. Held in conjunction
with the Alaska Forum on the Environment, the workshop will take place
in Space #2 on the lower level of the Egan Center, 555 West Fifth Avenue
in downtown Anchorage.
Launched in September 2006, ACCAP has a three-part mission: to assess
the socio-economic and biophysical impacts of climate variability in
Alaska, to make this information available to local and regional
decision-makers, and to improve Alaskans' ability to adapt to a changing
climate. A collaborative effort between the Fairbanks and Anchorage
campuses of the University of Alaska, ACCAP is supported by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and is the newest addition to a
nation-wide network of Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments
(RISA) programs.
The goals of the Partnering and Networking Workshop are to (1) share
more information about ACCAP and its vision, (2) identify who needs
information about climate impacts in Alaska to make well-informed
decisions and what information is needed, (3) initiate partnerships
between scientists, engineers, and information users, and (4) begin to
plan future research projects that can meet these information needs.
ACCAP's initial focus is climate impacts on Alaska's transportation
sector and includes the following pilot projects:
- Terrestrial water balance affecting tundra travel and access to
resources (Daniel White);
- The synergistic effects of climate change and land use in the Upper
Yukon River Watershed (Craig Gerlach);
- Sea ice conditions affecting Alaskan coastal communities, marine
ecosystems, and offshore transportation (John Walsh, Hajo Eicken); and
- A model of the value of Alaska public infrastructure at risk to
climate change (Peter Larsen, Fran Ulmer).
Future program and research areas may include wildfire, ecosystem
services, and other infrastructure issues.
