The new issue of Arctic Anthropology honors Frederica de Laguna, or
'Freddy,' a pioneering arctic archaeologist and anthropologist, who
passed away in October 2004 at the age of 98. De Laguna taught
anthropology at Bryn Mawr College and conducted groundbreaking
archaeological and ethnographic work in Alaska. Her landmark
publication, "Under Mount Saint Elias: The History and Culture of the
Yakutat Tlingit," was published in 1972 and she was elected to the
National Academy of Sciences in 1975.
Editors Rachel Mason and Susan A. Kaplan have compiled 17 papers in de
Laguna's honor written by retired and senior scholars, young
researchers, and Alaska residents with long-standing ties to the
anthropologist. Contributions include traditional academic papers and
personal reflections of colleagues and friends.
