The Arctic Centre of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands
announces the Large-scale Historical Industrial Exploitation of Polar
Areas (LASHIPA) Open Workshop being held on 1-4 April 2007.
The workshop is being convened to launch the LASHIPA project and to
formulate a research strategy and implementation plan, which includes
research problems, theoretical approaches, and project objectives.
LASHIPA is an IPY project focused on the history of scientific research
and the exploitation of natural resources, as well as the impacts on the
natural environment and indigenous peoples. The project involves study
of various settlements/stations (i.e., hunting, whaling, mining, and
research) from a bipolar, international, and comparative perspective.
One of the major project results will be a three-volume history of
industry in the polar areas, 1600-present.
