The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) in Bergen,
Norway invites applications for a PhD position on the project "Causes
and Consequences of the Extreme Climate Variability In the High North
Atlantic."
The increasing winter surface air temperatures at Svalbard, Norway are
accompanied by considerable ice edge retreat as well as intensification
of storm activity. No single set of causes is responsible for the
obvious polar amplification of the global warming in this area. The high
North Atlantic experiences significant inter-annual and inter-decadal
variability affected by a number of interdependent processes.
The PhD position involves combining the analysis of available
observational data from regular, in situ, and irregular field campaign
measurements with state-of-the-art climate, meso-scale, and turbulence
simulations. The analysis should quantify the heat budget in the region
and the study will result in better understanding of causes and patterns
of the observed changes, which could be further extrapolated to produce
more accurate prediction of the future climate in the region.
The three-year position is open for candidates from all countries.
Eligible candidates must have a Masters degree or equivalent. Women and
residents of Norway are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a
strong background in geosciences, such as meteorology, oceanography, or
related disciplines, with advanced knowledge of physics, mathematics
(data analysis), and computational fluid mechanics. Familiarity with
boundary layer theories, multivariate and non-parametric statistical
analysis, and single-column meteorological models will be an advantage.
The PhD will be granted at the University of Bergen, but the candidate
will work at NERSC. The candidate is required to collaborate
internationally and spend a considerable amount of time at the Svalbard
Science Centre in Longyearbyen, Svalbard and International Arctic
Research Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. Open-mindedness and good
communication skills in English are necessary.
Applications should consist of a CV, one-page letter explaining the
candidate's motivation and background, list of publications or/and
abstract of MSc thesis, copies of certificates and diplomas (submitted
as PDF files), and names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of
three academic references. Applications must be submitted via e-mail by
Sunday, 1 April 2007, to: admin [at] nersc.no.
