The first summer session of "Building Anthropology in Eurasia," a
three-year program in social and cultural anthropology, will be held on
15 July-3 August 2007, in Isiq Qol (Issyk Kul), Kyrgyzstan. The program
is part of the Regional Seminar for Excellence in Teaching (ReSET).

The "Building Anthropology in Eurasia" program brings together a group
of younger faculty from Eurasia with resource faculty from institutions
around the world to strengthen university-level teaching of anthropology
and build understanding of how anthropology is pursued in research and
how research can be integrated with the undergraduate teaching process.
Participants will meet for three-week sessions each summer and will
collaborate on year-round projects for the duration of the three-year
program.

The program will explore seven key dimensions relevant to building an
anthropology discipline in the region, including:
- how anthropologists are trained;
- how theory and thematic issues serve to inspire anthropological
research;
- how research is conducted;
- how researchers participate in the international network of
anthropological scholarship to obtain grants, become published, etc.;
- how anthropology is written for various purposes;
- ethical considerations which guide anthropologists; and
- ways that anthropology can contribute to the analysis of Eurasian
cultures and societies.

The three-week summer session consists of seminars, roundtables,
practicums, and workshops on anthropological theories, field methods,
ethics, teaching strategies, grant seeking, academic writing and
publishing, and other activities. During the session participants will:
- have the opportunity to gain a close acquaintance with internationally
prominent anthropologists and others studying Eurasian societies;
- gain in-depth exposure to anthropology as it is relevant today,
especially for the purposes of teaching and doing research in the
region;
- have the opportunity to interact substantively and establish
friendships with colleagues with similar interests; and
- begin work on research and teaching projects which will build a
grounding in anthropology in their own careers.

The program is organized and hosted by the Aigine Cultural Research
Center in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in cooperation with the Department of
Cultural Anthropology and Archaeology at American University-Central
Asia in Bishkek and the Program on Central Asia and the Caucasus at
Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Applicants must be pursuing a career in teaching anthropology at the
undergraduate university level, though no prior training or degrees in
anthropology are formally required, and have a strong knowledge of both
spoken and written English. Target participants will be drawn from the
Eurasian region. Please contact program organizers for detailed
eligibility requirements.

Program costs, including travel expenses, accommodation, meals, and
reading materials, will be covered by ReSET. Full application
information is available at:

The deadline for applications is Sunday, 15 April 2007.
