An international scientific conference, "The United States, Climate
Change, and the Arctic: Renewed American Interest in a Changing North,"
will be held on 19-20 April 2007 at the Montreal Science Center in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The conference is organized by the
International Council for Science, World Meteorological Organization,
and Center for U.S. Studies and International Geopolitical Center of the
Raoul-Dandurand Chair of Strategic and Diplomatic Studies at the
University of Quebec at Montreal.
The conference will examine the importance of U.S. interest in a
changing Arctic. With climate change and scientific evidence showing
rapid ice melt in the Arctic, it is necessary to scrutinize the multiple
political, economic, strategic, and energy interests of the U.S. in this
region as to better understand and explain the new realities of the
North and to grasp the many impacts U.S. policy could have on arctic
geopolitics.
