University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions. The course is offered by
the Natural Resources Management Department at both undergraduate and

The course includes study of permafrost-affected soils along the Elliot
and Dalton Highways from the Fairbanks area to Deadhorse on the North
Slope; soil-forming factors of the subarctic and arctic regions of
Alaska including parent material, vegetation, climate, topography, and
time; and soil classification, wetland delineation, and land use
interpretations of cryogenic soils.
Students must be physically fit for fieldwork, long days, and walking on
uneven or rocky ground through brush. Students must also provide their
own camping gear (i.e., sleeping bag, bedroll, and tent) and appropriate
