The International Summer School on High Northern Latitude Climate will
be held on 9-13 September 2007, at St. Petersburg State University,
Russia. The school involves study of climate change with specific
emphasis on a variety of its manifestations in and impacts on the
natural environments at high northern latitudes.
The summer school is an open opportunity for graduate students and young
scientists (under 35 years of age) aspiring to enhance their basic
knowledge and awareness of the current developments in this area. The
summer school includes plenary sessions and dedicated workshops at which
participants will give oral and poster presentations and participate in
scientific discussions attended by the invited plenary session
lecturers.
The summer school includes lectures and discussions that cover a broad
spectrum of the Arctic, sub-Arctic, and climate change issues, including
causal mechanisms of rapid climate shifts in the recent glacial epochs,
probability of ice-free summer arctic tracks in forthcoming decades,
fresh-water budget change and its influence on global thermohaline
circulation, the evolving relationship between north Atlantic deep water
formation and greenhouse effect of the atmosphere, permafrost dynamics,
the fate of the Greenland Ice Sheet and adequacy of current cryospheric
models, expected overall climate change impacts including environmental
and socio-economic/human dimensions, and the feasibility of satellite
monitoring of changes occurring in the atmosphere, ocean, and on land.
The school is organized by the Nansen International Environmental and
Remote Sensing Center in St. Petersburg, Russia; Nansen Environmental
and Remote Sensing Center in Bergen, Norway; Max Planck Institute for
Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany; St. Petersburg State University; and
University of Bergen. The school is supported by the Russian Ministry of
Education and Science.
Applicants should submit a CV, 500-word summary of research interests,
and application form that is available at:
