The Department of Arctic Technology at the University Centre in Svalbard
(UNIS) is accepting applications for a faculty position in arctic
infrastructure and geotechnical engineering.
The successful candidate should promote innovative solutions to the
geotechnical engineering aspects of infrastructure projects in cold
regions, such as house foundations, roads, quays, and pipelines. The
position may require broad foundation experience, skills in frozen and
thawing material testing, and/or numerical modeling. The successful
candidate will have access to two temperature-controlled cold rooms at
UNIS with testing equipment for frozen material as well as outdoor
arctic conditions and constructions. Ongoing research projects relevant
for the position relate to the use of geosynthetics in arctic climate to
monitor ground temperatures in greenfields, below buildings, and in
waste/mine spoil dumps, frozen ground investigation techniques, and
landslides and avalanches under arctic conditions. The successful
candidate will be expected to actively participate in the recruiting of
students to UNIS. Previous experience in Svalbard and other polar areas
is important.
Applicants must hold a PhD in an appropriate field or its equivalent and
are requested to document their pedagogic qualifications and experience.
