The Department of Geology at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is
accepting applications for a four-year PhD position in Quaternary
geology on the project "RISE - Reconstruction of the Ice Sheet Volume
and the Last Deglaciation on Svalbard - Constrained By Surface Exposure
and Radiocarbon Dating."
The program aims to better constrain the reconstruction of the last
glacial maximum (LGM) Svalbard-Barents-sea ice sheet configuration in
the mountain regions of Svalbard. The two contrasting scenarios of
Svalbard ice volume have not been rigorously tested, severely limiting
attempts to reconstruct meltwater fluxes into the Arctic Ocean during
deglaciation. The proposed project will combine new glacial geological
evidence to determine former ice volumes in Svalbard, to provide a firm
foundation for quantification of the freshwater inputs in changing
climate in the Arctic region. The RISE project is the first ever attempt
to determine the vertical dimensions of the LGM ice sheet in Svalbard by
mapping glacial trimlines in selected mountain areas and dating by means
of Surface Exposure Dating (SED) with cosmogenic nuclides. Several
institutes collaborate within this program and the PhD student is
expected to work closely with the Department of Geosciences, University
of Oslo.
The successful candidate will perform integrated analysis of glacial
erosional features mapped in different field areas of the Svalbard
archipelago and utilize remote sensing methods. The candidate will also
test the implementation of spectral analysis for the detection of
glacial erosional features. The candidate is expected to assist in
sampling for cosmogenic nuclide dating and deliver a three-dimensional
LGM digital model of regional different ice geometries for the
investigation areas.
Applicants must have a Masters degree in geo-information science,
Quaternary geology or glaciology, have experience conducting high
alpine/Arctic fieldwork, and must be creative, innovative, and
enthusiastic to do fieldwork in high Arctic mountain regions.
