Three important arctic events will be taking place 22-24 May 2007 in
Washington, D.C. in conjunction with the ARCUS 19th Annual Meeting and
Arctic Forum 2007, which gathers scientists, educators, agency
personnel, policy makers, and other stakeholders to discuss important
issues in arctic science, policy, and education and outreach.
CONGRESSIONAL SCIENCE BRIEFING ON "OBSERVING, UNDERSTANDING, AND
RESPONDING TO ARCTIC CHANGE"
A Congressional Science Briefing on "Observing, Understanding, and
Responding to Arctic Change" is scheduled for Tuesday, 22 May 2007 from
12:30-2:00 p.m. in the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science &
Transportation Hearing Room, 253 Russell Senate Office Building. The
briefing is open to the public and registration is not required.
Leading arctic scientists will describe the observed changes that are
ongoing in the Arctic, as well as scientific advances that help us
understand and respond to those changes. The briefing will include
discussion of practical challenges, opportunities, and policy
implications associated with climate change.
Moderated by Dr. Donald Perovich, Research Geophysicist at the U.S. Army
Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, the briefing's
featured speakers are:
- Dr. Mark Serreze, Senior Research Scientist, National Snow and Ice
Data Center, Colorado (arctic climate change)
- Dr. Andrea Lloyd, Associate Professor, Department of Biology,
Middlebury College, Vermont (terrestrial ecology)
- Dr. Maribeth Murray, Director, Human Dimensions of the Arctic System,
University of Alaska Fairbanks (human dimensions of change)
LIVE WEBCAST OF ARCUS ANNUAL MEETING AND ARCTIC FORUM
The ARCUS 19th Annual Meeting and Arctic Forum 2007 will be held in
Washington, D.C. on 23-24 May 2007 at the Embassy of Sweden and National
Association of Home Builders Conference Center.
The focus of this year's Arctic Forum is "Water in the Arctic:
International Collaborations and Understanding Environmental Change."
The Forum is co-chaired by Dr. Larry Hinzman, International Arctic
Research Center, University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Dr. Gunhild
Rosqvist, Stockholm University and Tarfala Research Station.
The 2007 Arctic Forum will be broadcast live via webstream and will
include an interactive message board for comments and questions.

HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF THE ARCTIC SYSTEM (HARC) OPEN MEETING
An open meeting of the Human Dimensions of the Arctic System (HARC)
program will be held on Thursday, 24 May 2007 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at
the National Association of Home Builders Conference Center. The meeting
focus is Human Dimensions Research in the Context of the International
Polar Year (IPY).
The HARC program is well positioned for a strong emphasis on societal
relevance during IPY. The open meeting is being held to seek community
input and feedback on planned IPY activities. Anyone is welcome to
participate and all interested parties are encouraged to join the
discussion.
