Organizers of the 2012 National Marine Educators Association (NMEA)
Annual Conference announce a call for abstracts. The conference,
entitled "North to Alaska's Seas: A Confluence of Science and Culture,"
will be convened 24-28 June 2012 in Anchorage, Alaska.
The NMEA Annual Conference will bring together formal and informal
educators, scientists, students, and resource managers to share ideas
about the world of water. Conference sponsors are the Northwest Aquatic
and Marine Educators (NAME) and the Alaska Center for Ocean Sciences
Education Excellence (COSEE Alaska).
Conference themes include science and art, science and culture (i.e.,
integrating traditional knowledge and western science), science and
technology, and large marine ecosystem science and education.
Abstract submission deadline: Friday, 17 February 2012.

- 18th Inuit Studies Conference

Organizers of the 18th Inuit Studies Conference, entitled
"Arctic/Inuit/Connections: Learning from the Top of the World," announce
a call for abstracts. The conference is organized by the Arctic Studies
Center at the Smithsonian Institution, and will be held 24-28 October
2012 in Washington, D.C.
The conference will cover a broad spectrum of topics, including climate
change and indigenous people; international cooperation in the Arctic;
roles of museums and museum collections in preserving Inuit languages,
heritage, and culture; governmental programs in the northern regions and
their interactions with local communities; and Inuit cultural/political
institutions.
The 2012 conference will be held in various Smithsonian museums. Several
special Inuit-themed exhibitions will be displayed across the
Institution. Opportunities for visiting collections, archives, and
laboratories are available.
Abstract submission deadline: 15 March 2012.
Early registration deadline: 1 September 2012.

Organizers of the Alaska Anthropological Association's 39th Annual
Meeting announce a call for abstracts. The meeting will be held 29
February - 3 March 2012 in Seattle, Washington.
The focus for the 2012 meeting is "Northern People and Landscapes in
Times of Change." Sensitivity to change has always been a hallmark of
Northern communities. The anthropological and archaeological historical
record gives witness to tremendous endurance, creativity, and resilience
in the face of climate, ecological, and social change. This record also
provides insights into the limits of resilience, wrenching conflicts,
and profound tragedies from broad to very local and personal scales.
Organizers encourage symposia and individual presentations focusing on
the ever more pressing need to understand the human dimensions of
changing landscapes. Welcoming the eclectic mix of presentations that
makes each annual meeting fresh and engaging, organizers look especially
for contributions that seek to draw lessons for the future from research
into the peoples and cultures of past and present.

- REMINDER: 44th International Liege Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics

Organizers announce the 44th International Liege Colloquium on Ocean
Dynamics, entitled "Remote Sensing of Colour, Temperature, and
Salinity--New Challenges and Opportunities," to be convened 7-11 May
2012 in Liege, Belgium.
The development of new sensors and algorithms has extended the
application of ocean remote sensing to new research domains. New data
analysis techniques are allowing improvements in the quality of the
datasets used for oceanographic and climatic research. The use of
satellite-derived salinity, as a fairly new dataset, is an exciting
opportunity to improve our knowledge of the ocean dynamics and
ocean-atmosphere interactions.
The 2012 Liege Colloquium will be devoted to the latest developments in
the research fields of salinity, temperature, and ocean color remote
sensing. Open scientific questions and new research directions are of
particular interest.
