International Symposium on the Arctic Research (ISAR)Miraikan, Tokyo, Japan
A new "International Symposium on the Arctic Research" will be initiated under the auspices of the IASC and CliC Subcommittee of the Science Council of Japan.
The Arctic and sub-arctic are key areas for the study of global change largely because the anthropogenic impact is projected to be the largest in this area due to complicated feedback processes. A number of international and interdisciplinary research projects are in progress studying the atmosphere-ocean-land system under the world-wide auspice of the International Polar Year (IPY) lasting from 2007 until 2009. In order to understand the feedback processes occurring in the Arctic and sub-arctic and to project future global warming, we need to establish an intense observational network and to exchange knowledge and information by combining different scientific communities with a common interest, the Arctic.
The proposed symposium will consists of three sub-sessions:
1. Global warming connected to the Arctic,
2. Hydrological cycle in the Arctic, and
3. Ecosystems in the Arctic.
The objective of the conference is for participants to exchange their knowledge and observations and to deepen their understanding on a wide range of topics related to the Arctic and sub-arctic. The organizers hope that science in the Arctic will draw increasingly more attention in the near future, and that this proposed conference would serve as the first step towards that goal.
