The research vessel PELAGIA was built in 1991 by Verolme Shipyard Heusden, at Heusden in The Netherlands. She was designed by Marine Structure Consultants at Schiedam in close co- operation with her owners, the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). Her name was taken from the beautifully coloured jellyfish Pelagia noctilluca. This species is common in the Atlantic and occasionally appears in small numbers in the North Sea. Characteristic of Pelagia noctilluca is its phosphorescent umbrella, which can be intensely luminous at night.

The PELAGIA is designed to make multidisciplinary research cruises in coastal seas and over continental shelves all over the world, but mainly she is operating in the North Sea.

The PELAGIA has a diesel-electric drive with a fixed pitch propellor, producing hardly any noise whilst sailing or on station. Excellent manoeuvrability is obtained by using the omni-directional bow thruster of 400 kW in combination with a flap rudder.

NIOZ has containerized laboratories available which can be locked on deck or in the containerhold of the Pelagia. This flexible and efficient system allows the use of tailor-made laboratories demanded by highly specialized research. Also a few modernly equipped permanent laboratories are available on board.
