Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik (formerly Poste-de-la-Baleine) is a northern village home to both Cree and Inuit communities, at the mouth of the Great Whale River, on the coast of Hudson Bay. The CEN ( Centre d'études Nordiques, Laval University ) research station, consisting of several buildings, has existed here since the 1960's. Researchers have at their disposal dry and wet laboratories, an experimental greenhouse, and a growth chamber. The living space, which can accommodate 25 researchers in the field season, includes bedrooms, a living room, and a cafeteria. The station also has a workshop and several warehouses. A climate station is in operation year round. The CEN provides a logistics service to researchers who want to travel anywhere within a 350 km radius of the station. Camping equipment, boats (motorboats and zodiacs), and motor vehicles (pick-ups, ATVs, snowmobiles, etc), are available for researchers. The CEN also manages the rental of aircraft. Research teams establishing temporary camps in the summer (and sometimes in the winter), rely on the research station to re-supply camp stocks and fuel.
