Ivotuk is on the north slope of the Brooks Range, about 220 miles (354 kilometers) south of Barrow, Alaska. It was the site of geologic exploration in the 1980's. This activity has created access (an airstrip and road) as well as a history of human impact over several decades, both of which lend themselves to study of the area.

The Ivotuk area has been under study since 1998, by the Water and Environmental Research Center (WERC) of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF). The program is named "Arctic Transitions in the Land-Atmosphere System" (ATLAS). Details of the study, and data, are available at the WERC-ATLAS web site.

ATLAS Project Ivotuk Site CD

The Arctic Transitions in the Land-Atmosphere System (ATLAS) Project is
a coordinated program that will examine the geographical patterns and controls over climate-land surface exchange and develop reasonable
scenarios of future change in the Arctic. This CD is a compilation of information and measurements made at the Ivotuk site, and contains data, pictures and descriptions for a 2 1/2 year period from 1998 through June 2000. It includes information from several disciplines including meteorology, hydrology, ecology, biology and chemistry.

This CD was produced by the UCAR Joint Office for Science Support (JOSS) in collaboration with the ATLAS project scientific investigators. This work was sponsored by the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs.
