The newest of the vessels designed and built by Rieber Shipping A/S, the Polarbjørn, was built in Norway and completed in 2001. This vessel is built as an Antarctic expedition vessel, but also designed for advanced ROV and light construction/ cable support duties. The vessel has large deck areas, a knuckle-boom crane, large under-deck storage holds and accommodation for 84 charterers personnel. Features of interest for science work include open deck spaces, including aft deck with A-frame, icebreaking capability, dynamic positioning, helipad (can be forward or aft mounted), wet and dry laboratories, and ROV support.
