The Italian National Research Council's Arctic Station Dirigibile Italia was first inaugurated in 1997 in the scientific settlement of Ny-Ålesund. The station was named after Umberto Nobile's famous airship Italia, which in 1928 was the first scientific expedition to the North Pole. The research activities carried out at Dirigibile Italia are coordinated by Polarnet, the C.N.R.'s Network of Polar Research, which manages the Arctic Strategic Project and also the activities and workgroups of C.N.R. in Antarctica.

The Arctic Station Dirigibile Italia is a 330 m2 infrastructure, 170 of which are used as laboratories and offices. The station can host a maximum of 7 researchers in its facilities and more researchers can be hosted in other subsidiary accomodations of Ny-Ålesund. The station is not staffed all year round but is operative for more than six months per year and can total around 700 mandays, part of which result from international collaborations with foreign institutions and researchers.

Location
Description:   The Italian Arctic Station Dirigibile Italia was officially inaugurated in Ny-Ålesund on May 15, 1997.

The station is operated by the National Research Council of Italy (Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche - CNR), which is a part of the Polarnet (the CNR network of polar research). The Polarnet works as a co-ordinating system of independent Research Institute of CNR, directly and permanently involved in polar science. The Polarnet includes 16 Institutes of the CNR, about 65 scientific teams and more than 180 researchers. The Station is situated in the international station of Ny-Ålesund; it consist of 300 squared metres of labs, offices and facilities premises. The scientific activities are carried out in the framework of the CNR Arctic Strategic Project started in 1997.

CNR is a member of ICSU (International Council of Scientific Unions), SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research), and ESF (European Science Foundation).

The main research activities focused on:
-Atmospheric Chemistry: aerosol
-Atmospheric Physics: trace-gases
-Marine Biology: nitrogen
-Astrophysics/solar terrestrial relation (auroras, cosmic rays)
-Technology (marine corruption of alloys, remote-control)
-Oceanography/limnology (currents, hydrology, radioactive substances)
-Environmental studies (remote-sensing, environmental radioactivity, permafrost)
-Human biology and medicine

Availability and Cost
Availability:   The access to the CNR Arctic Project (Project in the following) will include all infrastructural, logistical, technical and scientific support that is requested from the selected programmes. Depending on the availability of funds, support is restricted to cover only travel and subsistence costs for field campaigns and shorter visits involving the installation and maintenance of automated instruments. Note: Only Italian research teams are eligible to get funds under the Project. Applications by foreign teams are admitted under cooperation with Italian teams. A field program is requested. The project must be of interest to or in co-operation with the CNR Station 'Dirigibile Italia'.
