| Description: | | Since 1963, French scientists have developed activities in Svalbard. These activities are supported by the French Polar Institute (Institut Paul Emile Victor, IPEV) since 1992 who, since 1999, run the Charles Rabot and Jean Corbel stations. IPEV is linked with other institutes, toward the development of international collaborations.
Running programs 2000-2004: Geology (metamorphic rocks, fossiliferous layers), Geomorphology (dynamic processes on glaciers margins), Upper atmosphere (wind and temperature in the mesosphere), Ecology (Eider duck: behavior and physiology, influence of parasitism on seabirds colonies), Physiology (hormones, metabolism in Kittiwakes). Monitoring: DORIS system (GPS location for earth movements). |

| Research sources: | | There is a listing of studies carried out during the Summer 2002 campaign in French: http://www.ifremer.fr/ifrtp/pages/prosval.html
These are some of the other projects at the IPEV bases in collaboration with: Norwegian Polar Institute, Kings Bay, AWI, Zeppelin station:
2003: Installation of a permanent «clean power system», meteorological station, scientific equipment at the Corbel Station in the aim of future researches based on Climate Change studies in particular on the function of the snow-pack chemistry in these events. 2004: first scientific program using the Corbel Station devoted to atmospheric science. Installation of adapted logistics to minimize the impact of local pollution on samplings in the snow pack. 2005: Tethered balloons, for atmospheric science. |
